IKEA is accused of recalling 29 million MALM and other chest and dresser models due to a serious tip-over hazard, urging consumers to anchor them or return for a refund.
An Ikea spokesperson told CR that the company could not comment on ongoing litigation but said that Ikea has invested millions of dollars in communications about both the dresser recall and tip-over prevention through a variety of channels, including its website, stores, advertising, social media, and email.
For years, Ikea has repeatedly come under fire for selling unsafe dressers that did not meet voluntary industry stability standards and for its handling of the recall, which was announced in 2016 and reannounced in 2017, and ultimately included 17.3 million dressers.
Lawsuit Filed Against Ikea Faulty Furniture Recall - Consumer Reports
Indeed, as of June 2019, Ikea stated that out of the 17.3 million recalled dressers, the company had issued only 400,000 refunds for returned dressers.
The lawsuit alleges that in addition to knowing about the dangers and deaths linked to its dressers before the recall, Ikea failed to commit sufficient resources to alert consumers of the recall.
Ikea first recalled the Malm line of dressers along with some other Ikea dresser models in June 2016 after the products were tied to the tip-over deaths of several children.
